Chapter Nine
Amanda tiredly climbed the stairs to her apartment and unlocked the front door. âJack, are you here yet?â she called into the apartment.
âSure am,â Jack answered from the kitchen. âSupperâs almost ready.â
âGood, Iâm starved,â Amanda said as she followed her nose to the kitchen. Once there she moved easily into Jackâs outstretched arms.
Jack bent his head and kissed Amanda slowly and thoroughly. âYou smell like a corpse,â he murmured as he ran his hands down her back and patted her bottom.
âHow romantic!â Amanda teased. âI guess the mysteryâs gone out of our relationship.â
Jack released her but kept one arm around her waist as he turned back to the stove. âWell, you know how it is,â he kidded, his eyes twinkling. âAfter two months I guess the romance goes out of any relationship.â He spooned up some spaghetti sauce. âHere, try this. Does it need more salt?â
Amanda tasted the steaming sauce cautiously. âNo, itâs perfect. Have we really been together that long?â
Jack nodded and kissed her temple. âTwo months today. Happy anniversary,â he said as he handed her a small box from his top pocket.
âJack, youâre precious,â Amanda exclaimed as she tore the paper from the box. She opened it and found an elegant ladyâs sport watch. âJack, itâs beautiful. You really shouldnât have.â
âOf course I should have,â Jack insisted. âMaybe this one will survive you dunking it in the sink.â
âI hope so,â Amanda responded, thinking of the watch she had recently ruined in the laboratory. She strapped the watch on, and Jack immediately grabbed her wrist and held it under the faucet. âJack, you idiot, donât do that!â she squealed. âYouâre soaking it!â
âThatâs the idea.â He held her wet wrist up to his ear. âItâs not ticking,â he announced solemnly.
âOf course it isnât. Itâs quartz,â Amanda informed him dryly. She held it out in front of her and together they watched the digits change. âItâs doing fine,â she said. She threw her arms around Jackâs neck. âYouâre so good to me! Thanks.â
They hugged one another before Jack turned back to the stove. Since he pretty well had things under control, Amanda escaped to the bedroom to change her clothes and wash her face, thinking how nice it was to come home and find Jack there. She had given him a key about a month ago, and more often than not he beat her here and had supper well under way by the time she drove up. They would spend the evening together, and most of the time Jack brought fresh clothing to wear in the morning and stayed the night. Amanda thoroughly enjoyed the time Jack spent with her and missed him on the nights he didnât see her.
Amanda stepped out of her skirt and pulled off her slip and pantyhose. She left them in the middle of the bed, knowing that Jack would tease her about it later. But she didnât mindâshe never minded his gentle teasing. It seemed to be a way for Jack to show affection, and it made her feel loved.
